War Horse sculpture
- Mixed media on sculpted substrate
- 38 approxcm x 43cm
- War Horse was inspired by a combination of legend and historical fact, and a well-stacked example of the excitement I gain from every material I find. Each piece has a story, some more obvious than others to prompt imagination.

The substrate of the horse is formed out of cement-based mortars gradually grew up out of leftover mixes of other projects then sculpted to refine the basic proportions. The surface was built up again with found and waste materials including sea glass, stained glass, Smalti glass, clinker from the forge, scrap glass smelted in my wood burner, shipwrecked and studio pottery shards, bone and stone, and slate slithers. I forged stainless steel ears and Nathan Bennett, my blacksmith colleague, manufactured the wheeled base. The wheels turn but little grub screws act as brakes.

Hi Helen…since I have not been keeping up with flickr I didn’t get a chance to see this piece finished. I just have to tell you how marvelous it turned out and putting the horse on wheels was just brilliant, but then all your work is brilliant!
